Why Starting a Company is Easier than 10 Yrs Ago

You don't need money. You just need motivation.

You don't need money. You just need motivation.

Not too long ago, outbound marketing was key in spreading your message.  Commercials, print ads, and spam email are examples of what big brands spent their money on to get noticed and stay relevant.  The reason these methods no longer work is because consumers no longer watch commercials (dvr), no longer read their news in print (thanks to blogs!), and no longer receive mass emails (spam blockers).  People are adapting to get what they want and so it makes sense that we are looking to new channels for our content.  Luckily for small companies a new kind of marketing has emerged that helps us compete on a level playing field.  Inbound marketing, which is cheaper than dirt, is the process of ‘getting found’ by people already shopping in your industry.  The idea is that you set up your website as a hub that attracts people naturally using social media, and then convert that traffic into sales.  Give people the content they want, then they will check out your product or service.

You will encounter discussion about inbound vs. outbound marketing and talk to marketing directors of large companies that will promote one or the other.  The bottom line though is this (and it can’t be denied): If you are a small company with no budget to market—and I mean nothing—you can still promote the hell out of your company if you know what you are doing.  Building awareness about your product or service should no longer mean investing a backbreaking sum of cash.  Start thinking about spending your time to network instead of the little capital you have to operate.  Within this blog alone you will be able to learn various ways to achieve web traffic, including search engine optimization, link building, and taking advantage of social media.  Subscribe right now and you will be updated twice a week, starting September 2009, with tips on how to market your small company effectively with a small budget.
