ESPN Makes me feel bad

I recently came across a neat little toy ESPN has developed called the Salary Crunch.  It’s a tool which allows you to input your salary, then tells you what it takes for famous sports figures like Andy Pettitte, Rajon Rondo, and Eli Manning to earn the same amount.  For example:

Philip Rivers  earns your yearly salary by dipping a tortilla chip in a bowl of guacamole.

or

Albert Haynesworth has you covered with a half-sneeze.  Not even a full sneeze, but one of those false-alarm sneezes when he thinks it’s coming, takes a big breath, and then nothing.

When comparing the median household income in the US, $50,000, to Jason Bay’s new contract, here’s what popped up.  It’s not pretty.

The Lesson: Make realistic comparisons for yourself.

Besides making the average person feel badly about their lot in life, I believe this tool does provide that valuable lesson, especially when it comes to monitoring your online presence.  As discouraging as this salary comparison is, comparing your online presence to Ashton Kutcher would be just as damaging.   Do your best to connect with customers, listen, and keep your comparisons in the same league.

If you’ve got any thoughts on benchmarking and setting expectations, please share.

  1. It’s sad isn’t it? Why not just make a website called ” haha you’re poor by comparison?” or a different one geared towards laughing at you while you’re down? The reality of it is, although we may realistically work harder, they get paid a million dollars a guacamole bowl dip. That’s just how the tostito crumbles, I suppose.
I can’t imagine that website has been successful? Either that, or the suicide hotline must be bussssssy!
