Why my salsa-making days are over

Of the many things running through my mind having recently moved to New York and joined Rising Lynx full-time, one recurring and oddly obscure thought stands out:

“If I try to make salsa, somebody in a cowboy hat will kill me”

Pace Picante’s early 90’s ad campaign was centered on a single fundamental idea, Location Matters. You can only get real, deep-dish pizza in Chicago, real bagels in New York, and apparently, real salsa in San Antonio. If somebody in New York tries to make salsa, it will incite a riot.

Is this something that is valid? Does location matter? I think it does. Certainly there are mediocre BBQ joints in Memphis and good ones in Florida, but generally speaking, location does lend a level of credibility and trust that can’t be found elsewhere.

Are you more likely to buy something based on where it was produced?

  1. I think you should still try to make salsa. Who knows, maybe it will turn out great!

  2. The real danger of making salsa lies in perfecting the spice. But I’d be afraid of ninja cowboys out to rope me as well! Wasn’t there one commercial for Pace where they let a branding iron slip from their hand? What do I conclude overall? Clearly, the salsa business….is risky.
